THE BLOODKIN COMMUNITY GOSPEL REHAB

Released September 29, 2001

Charm Four.
This was a tough record to make. The plan at first was to make an "acoustic" record in the Creeperweed mold. Early rough mixes of a few tracks, "The Ugliest Part" and "Love's Getting Older", are all stripped down minimal. But just as things were really getting started in the studio, our manager Zac Weil passed away unexpectedly. I had to step back and think about things awhile. I wound up throwing out most of the tunes we'd planned to record and writing a whole new batch; meditations on life and death and all that good shit. And we started wondering, "What kind of record would Zac really want us to make?" So we broke back out the electric guitars (Zac loved the high-powered rock), and we got down to business.

This time we had an intact band ready to record, with Paul "Crumpy" Edwards on bass and Bentley Zebulon Rhodes on drums. We nailed some pretty good takes I think. David Barbe always says this is the record he gets the most complements about; that this record overall "sounds" the best. It definitely elicited some of our most positive reactions and reviews. It's hard for me to say, really, because I'm a little too close to the forest, and also like I said, this was a tough record to make. It's hard for me to separate the record from the memories of that time period. But I heard the whole thing through again not too long ago, sitting downtown in the Georgia Bar, and it made me smile quite a few times. Bittersweet though. I know I love some of these songs a lot, and the guys in the band put down some mighty fine performances. The songs "Jazz Funeral", "The Ugliest Part", "Kingly", "Love's Getting Older", and "Crosses By The Highway" have all wound up getting pretty solid rotation in the Bloodkin live shows.
